Video: Reel Pride Recap

Video by Jerry Williams of TVJerry.com.

Despite the snowy wintery mix, a crowd filled the Firehouse Theater on Friday night for Reel Pride Richmond, the city’s first LGBT Film Festival.  Cocktails and four varieties of chic popcorn (Truffled-Parmesan, anyone?) complemented the debut of Patrik, 1.5.  Saturday brought four other films and a dinner event at The Camel raising money for ROSMY.  GayRVA was a proud sponsor of Reel Pride Richmond.

Special thanks to ROSMY for the following pics below the fold.

Solid 10k Training Plan

You mastered the art of the stretch and remembered that breathing matters, essential before any workout. Now you are ready to begin your 10k training, but even before “the run,” it is important to set milestones and establish a workout routine you can commit. The purpose is to plan according to everything else you are doing and a great method to measure your progress and success.

Here is an example of a simple work out plan:

  • 10 minute stretch
  • 30 minutes elliptical or stationary bike at various inclines and resistance
  • 45 minute consistent running
  • 15 minute post stretch

Take a regular notebook or purchase runners journal at your local bookstore and document what you will do. It’s okay to be in general or very specific in what exercises and routines you will do – as long you can commit.

In business, we are used to written contracts and agreements. If you are serious about training for the 10k or any running event, set the bar and write an agreement to yourself, such as, “I plan to commit to my workout routine two to three times a week for the next three weeks. I also promise I will increase my routines four to five times a week before the race on ____  (date).”  In addition, so on.

The routine is set, an agreement has been reached, and now you are on your way to running and training your best for the 10k…

Do it! It’s not too late to sign up with the over 20,000 runners:

Say “I Love You” with Chocolate…

Who ever wrote the book of love must have smeared the pages with chocolate.  Being a self confessed chocoholic, I know the satisfaction of a simple fudge brownie and the extravagant delight of a dark chocolate mousse.

Looking to make something special for your chocoholic love then look no further.  Try this rendition of a lava cake and satiate their desires…for chocolate at least.

Chocolate Sinkholes

Serves 6 to 8

Ingredients
1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, cut into pieces
12 ounces bittersweet (dark) chocolate, chopped
1 3/4 cups sugar
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
8 large eggs
2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

Instructions

Melt the butter and chocolate in a double boiler or a metal bowl set over simmering water, stirring occasionally. Allow the mixture to cool to room temperature.  You can do this in the microwave just by heating 30 – 45 seconds then stirring and repeating until completely melted.
Preheat your oven to 325 degrees F.  Sift the sugar, flour, baking powder, and salt together and set aside.  Beat the eggs and vanilla in a medium bowl until frothy.   Stir in the chocolate mixture until incorporated.  Then slowly stir in the sugar-flour mixture just until everything is combined.

Divide the batter among six 7-ounce ceramic teacups or ramekins.   Arrange the custard cups in a baking dish or roasting pan and fill the dish with enough cool tap water to come one-third of the way up the sides of the cups.   (This water bath assures that the bottom portions of the cakes remain in a batter state.)

Bake for 34 to 38 minutes, until the tops are firm.  Serve warm.  I prefer them topped with vanilla ice cream and chocolate syrup. Sinkholes can be made up to a day in advance and warmed for 30 seconds in microwave before topping with ice cream.

Joe and Dean’s Mission

The Rainbow Minute celebrates this weekend’s Reel Pride Richmond with a series highlighting the history of LGBT film festivals.

In 2004, when gay couple Joe Wilson and Dean Hamer got married, they ran their wedding announcement in Joe’s hometown newspaper in Oil City, Pennsylvania. All hell broke loose.

But the announcement hit home for Kathy Springer, whose gay son was being tormented at his high school. She sent the couple a letter expressing her heartache. Joe and Dean, filmmakers living in D.C., picked up their cameras and traveled to Oil City.

There they filmed their interactions with citizens on the controversy, and crafted the gripping documentary, “Out in the Silence.”

Its subtitle is – “love, hate and a quest for change in small town America.”

The powerful film will be shown in Richmond on Saturday, February 6 at 11am at Firehouse Theater, as part of ROSMY’s Reel Pride Richmond film festival. Admission is free.

“The Rainbow Minute,” a radio show on WRIR, Richmond Independent Radio, is produced by Judd Proctor and Brian Burns and airs on 97.3 FM every Weekday at 9:03am, 12:30pm and 4:30pm.  Listen to the WRIR’s audio stream here.
