Support Fan Free Clinic at the Holiday Rock and Shop

holiday rock and shopOn Dec. 6, make Gallery 5 your one-stop holiday shop and support two local organizations. The Holiday Rock & Shop is a benefit presented by Cherry Bomb, Richmond’s premier all-female DJ collective to raise money for Gallery 5 and the Fan Free Clinic

Over 30 select area crafters and retailers will set up shop in Gallery 5 to help Richmond get its holiday shopping done early, offering records, vintage clothing and a variety of handmade jewelry and cool crafts.

Both floors of Gallery 5 will be open during the event, with beverages served at the bar and Cherry Bomb’s six DJ’s spinning records throughout the day.

Drink Coffee for World AIDS Day

Starbucks cupToday is World AIDS Day and you can help support AIDS awareness and research by buing a cup of coffee.

In support of World AIDS Day, Starbucks is contributing 5 cents from every beverage sold to the Global Fund to help fight AIDS in Africa.

tastetherainbow-whiteWhile I don’t support a mega-corporate titan like Starbucks (the boy and I prefer going to Captain Buzzy’s in Church Hill), they are contributing to a good cause – although 100% of sales (instead of 5 cents) would be more ideal.

At least the money they raise is doing some good.

In just one year in partnership with (RED)™, Starbucks has generated enough money to buy more than 7 million days of medicine to help those living with HIV in Africa. Overall, (RED) partners and events have generated $140 million and these funds have supported AIDS programs in Africa that have reached more than 4 million people.

Equality Virginia’s Campaign to End Workplace Discrimination

EV LogoEquality Virginia is sending out a petition to gather support to end workplace discrimination. The group is collecting names on their End Workplace Discrimination petition. EV plans to use these names to show members of the General Assembly the number of Virginia voters who support this issue.

Non DiscriminationIn Virginia, there is no state-wide law to protect people from discrimination on the basis of their real or perceived sexual orientation in the private or public workplace. However, there is widespread acceptance of non-discrimination policies for GLBT employees. Equality Virginia needs help to translate this broad public support into action at the 2010 General Assembly.

You can do this in two ways.

Equality Virginia Opens Up Nominations for OUTStanding Virginians

EV LogoEarlier this year, Equality Virginia recognized 20 OUTstanding Virginians that have made significant contributions to the LGBT community.

From EV:

These honorees are gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender Virginians who have made a mark. Some are activists whose courage and dedication to equality have influenced our movement. Others are GLBT elected officials, entertainers, or business leaders who have achieved great success.

They are continuing the this recognition at the next Annual Commonwealth Dinner to be held May 1, 2010.  Nominations are now being accepted to honor five more OUTstanding Virginians at the event.  The nomination form can be found here and is due by December 31, 2009.

A committee will review all submissions and compile a list to be approved by EV’s Board of Directors  in the spring.
