New Group For Lesbians Over 40 Meets Tonight

Tonight from 7 p.m.-9 p.m., the Gay Community Center of Richmond hosts their first discussion group for lesbians over forty. According to GCCR Volunteer Coordinator Cindy Bray, the group will fill a much-needed niche for the community. The meeting will be organizational gauging interest in the group.

“At the Saffire concert, there were women that hadn’t seen each other in thirty years or so,” Bray said.

After the concert, women mentioned to Bray how having a group like this has been missed. With the interest in rebuilding the group, community members have stepped up to help facilitate. For now, Bray is the point of contact until the group fully develops.

According to a GCCR survey conducted last year, women in this age bracket have been looking for social activities and a place to share dialogue. One of the facilitators Bray is working with plans to build a social network.

“Part of [having the group] is just the aspect of having something that’s not bar-related and to have a chance to socialize,” Bray said.

She said the group might discuss issues that are pertinent to women over forty. As they grow older, some lesbians may not have the support they need.

“People are getting older and don’t have a family member that can pick up the slack,” she said. “It’s building your own family.”

The group will meet in the GCCR Gallery. For more information, e-mail Bray at volunteer@gayrichmond.com or call 804.622.4646 ext. 22.

Gay Community Center of Richmond Celebrates 10 Years

GCCR 10From Jay Squires of the Gay Community Center of Richmond:

In 1999, a small group of activists came together to build an organization that would make Central Virginia a safe, welcoming place where Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender people could live and work free from discrimination, inequality and violence. They created the Richmond Gay Community Foundation.

They founded Diversity Thrift and Diversity Bingo, and made grants to groups that benefit LGBT people. Since that time over $600,000 has been donated to dozens of organizations that work with us to make Richmond a better place. Groups like ROSMY, Richmond Triangle Players, Equality Virginia and the Fan Free Clinic benefited because all of us donated, volunteered and worked so very hard to make it happen.

In 2008 the Richmond Gay Community Foundation opened Virginia’s first LGBT community center – the Gay Community Center of Richmond. We join together at the Gay Community Center of Richmond for concerts and musicals, for political debate and for the solemn remembrance of milestones and tragedies. We celebrate our pride here and we make news here.

Since we opened, more than forty groups have used our facilities for their own programming. We recently completed a comprehensive survey of our community’s programming needs – the largest such survey ever completed in Central Virginia. With the input we received and the commitment of generous supporters, we will expand programming in 2010 to make your community center as effective as any in the nation.

The Gay Community Center of Richmond would not exist without the passion and support of people like you, and we continue to need your help. While over 80% of our revenue comes from our income producing operations, we also rely on donations from our supporters.

The generosity of individuals like you helped create the Gay Community Center of Richmond, and it will help us grow. Please donate so we can continue our work serving Central Virginia’s LGBT community.
